Sauce, These forums are a great source of information (pun intended)! Thank you for clearing that up for me (and maybe Anton, original poster). Your G3 looks magnificent, no doubt about it. You have obviously put much effort and thought into it and there had to be a good reason for that fin – your boat is not cluttered with useless junk, centre steering, jackplate etc obviously setup for best performance & speed. Excellent!
I spent my 20s skiing behind an inboard skiff. All inboards then had a skeg (just fo'ward of midship) and it helped considerably in turns, when conflicting forces of the prop and rudder were taking place. I wondered what a skeg on the transom would achieve when the outboard (prop & rudder combined) were working in conjunction to push in a certain direction. Your explanation makes absolute sense. I have never seen such a 'turn fin' and I noticed it immediately.
I first saw the photo on a facebook site called 'OMC 3cyl and V4 engines'. There's also a fabulous pic of you at speed on fb page: 'Florida Vintage Raceboat Club'. Here's a sceensnap:
The addition to your helmet gave me a grin. Great stuff, I wish we had similar racing somewhere close to me.
