I purchased the below 1965 G3 Open Cockpit last year for $100 in VA and have started restoring it. The picture below is of the day I picked it up along with the tree, dirt, ants and wasps. Other than the metal trim nothing was salvageable, the transom, sponsons and floor were shot!

Good find Rich, and at a good price. From the small photo it appears to have an intact original windscreen. That makes it a better find. Put the effort in, you will love the boat when it is finished. The windscreen can be polished and restored - almost impossible to find. Spend some time scrolling through the old forum, there are some excellent posts on how to achieve a difficult job (such as replacing the transom). You will have to separate the top from the hull to do it all properly, no big deal really. Whatever you do, don't cut the curved transom off, retain the external skin and read the old forum for tips. I recall one of the attendees at the "2009 International G3 Rally" remarking about his G3 that "he had a work of art in his driveway". I can't agree more. Good luck, good workmanship. Ken

Hi Ken,
Thanks for the response. I would have added more pictures at this point, but the system limits them to 2 MB and most of them are over that. I'm not sure the windscreen is original, the frame looks homemade but is one piece. Do you know if there is away to determine it? I almost through it away. Pictures I have seem online appears to indicate that there was two different styles, one curved and the other square like mine. Not sure if this is accurate? In regards to your comment about the transom, are you saying to leave it the original height? I was thinking about making it higher.

Unfortunately I'm not able to share the pictures of all the junk that I took and cleaned out. But, below you can see the pic's after doing so. It appears that a bilge was added, not sure why other than leaks that were not addressed. Attachments:

Starting to cut fiberglass for stringer repairs. I was glad to find that this boat does not have wood stringers. Planning to fiberglass the engine splash well to the upper/top section of the boat to strengthen it. Not sure why it wasn't designed/built that way? Attachments:

Started stringer repair. Hung the top of the boat vertically and would flip it for better access while sanding and making repairs. Filled in holes in dashboard for steering and instruments. Debating to do the transom repair from the inside, or cut the skin off the back of the boat? It would have been easier to do it from the inside before repairing the stringers. Thinking about a two piece transom, not sure if its strength would be impacted in doing so? This boat also had the rear drain plugs for the sponsons. I'm guessing no one ever drained them since they were rotten. I'm not planning on putting them back in, figured I would leave a hole on the inside rear corner for it to drain into the boat?

Had a lot of deep crazing in the gelcoat. Filled it in with glazing compound since filler was too thick to get into the cracks. After several coats of putty and lots of sanding, applied 3 coats of primer to the top. Attachments:

I sanded the gelcoat completely off my 63 and then put on a new gelcoat. after which I sealed the boat and painted it with basecoat clearcoat PPG. The previous owner had removed the entire front deck to make it a bass boat which I had to RE-fabricate. Yours looks like a fun project. I would not make a 2 piece transom,,, stick with one piece out of 3/4 marine ply sandwiched. I would also add knee brasses for strength. When I was a kid we used to add knee brasses to the original G3 and put 85 or 100 hp engines on them to jump waves... Great boat... I'm looking for another one to restore. I sold mine too cheap after I finished it. Good luck with yours

Yogi101, thanks for the reply. I have been thinking about applying clearcoat, and making knee brasses. I'll have to search the forum for more info, and any input you have on these are welcome.
