I first purchased and restored this G3 in 1985 and powered it with a used 1980 60hp Johnson. I then sold it to a friend in 1987. He sold it to a friend of his, who in turn sold it another acquaintance of mine. After again falling into disrepair the boat was offered to me for free in 2004. I restored it again including new wood in the transom, hull stringers, floor, dashboard and deck stringers. I re-powered it with a very low time 40hp Gale Sovereign that I rebuilt. The boat is based in South Florida and we use it for waterskiing and wakeboarding

Welcome to the site Yankee! Nothing like a blue trimmed G3... (Just like Bandit) What a great story having a boat passed through several hands then back to you... So what's the story about the motor? What year is it? Be sure to register your boat on the main site. Dean

The motor is a 1962 Gale Sovereign 40hp. I bought from a fellow in New York who had it in storage for many years. It was in excellent shape with no corrosion. Because of its age, I installed new seals in the powerhead and lower unit, and installed new piston rings, points, coils, condensers and plugs along with a new water pump. (Gale was built by OMC for a few years so parts are no problem.) It runs like a new motor!

Hi Yankee,
Very nice! Period correct and typical G3 horsepower (lots had 40 HP motors in the day)... what a great find. Having a period correct motor was important to my restoration, so I got my hands on a 1963 cloud white Merc.
Not sure if you've stumbled across my dilemma thread here on the site... but I started to install a Phantom Black (decal'd as a 1971) Merc, but in the end I wasn't satisfied with the look, so I need to get my white Merc back on this spring.

Yankee:
Welcome to the website Sir! That is a very nice looking G-3 you have.
Our one-family 1960 G-3 actually had a 1960 Johnson 40 H.P. Outboard when my Dad first took delivery of it.

Hi Yankee, I like those rear jump seats. Is that your design and do they fold? I also have a dumb question that probably has been covered a hundred times here. What are you using to get your skiers back in the boat? I'm sure when I finish mine my grandkids are going to want to ski behind her and I can't think of a place to put a boarding ladder because of the sponsons. Andy

Hi Andy,
We just turn the motor to one side, then the skier swims up to that side, and steps on the motor cavitation plate and pulls themselves up over the transom. It works pretty good.
